School Psychologist
I interviewed a school psychologist from a local elementary school on what is it exactly like to assist a child that has Aspergers syndrome.
What was it like working with a child with Aspergers?
Each child with AS is different because of their level of severity. I see every child the same it does not matter if they had a disorder or were considered to be the average child. Most of the children that came to see me had difficulty staying on task in the classroom when it comes being interested with academic work in class as well as getting along with peers.
The different treatments you used.
Before the child can be assisted an evaluation is made to undersatdn the severity of AS; this is when an IEP is made. It is common to Work with a medical physician to understand their medical needs and if they are on medication. The goal is to have the child blend in with the other children in order to have social relations with others. It is more important to get the other children and teachers to accept the child and work around their needs in order to make sure their anxiety does not go higher.
Do many have learning disabilities?
Many did not have a learning disability, it was more of them to get used to the environment in school. One thing the stood apart from the average child us those with AS run on impulses. It is hard for them to plan out decisions because their brain is not wired that way.
What treatments seemed to work?
Every child has the ability to learn but one must have patience to when assisting a child with AS. It is a continues progress because they will need some support throughout their life. Again it is important to have support parents and other family members that can be positive guides in their life.
